The Call of Sinai in Our Age: An Interfaith Conversation on Rabbi Irving Greenberg’s The Triumph of Life

Rabbi Irving Greenberg recently wrote, “People of all religions must work together to repair the world politically, economically, and culturally, and turn the Earth into the paradise all humans deserve.” For many years, “Interfaith Dialogue” has functioned as an important vehicle for achieving the goal of healing the world through Tikkun Olam. “The power and value of not being alone,” as Rabbi Greenberg puts it, is attested by his own interfaith initiatives over the course of his long career.

On Sunday, June 1st at 7:00 p.m. at Temple Beth El, we will be joined by The Rev. Maria Tjeltveit, a retired Episcopal priest, who served as the Ecumenical and Interfaith Officer for the Diocese of Bethlehem (2006-2020) and has been involved in the Institute for Jewish-Christian Understanding and the Interfaith Action Group. She currently serves as the President of the Board of the Allentown School District Foundation.
Our conversation will revolve around Rabbi Irving Greenberg’s new book, The Triumph of Life: A Narrative Theology of Judaism and its connection to Revelation and Redemption in an unredeemed world.

Please join us for what I am sure will be an inspirational conversation. No prior reading is necessary, but we do encourage you to read the book in advance.

Evening Schedule:
7:00 pm - Dairy refreshments and snacks.
8:00 pm - Conversation with Rev. Maria Tjeltveit and Rabbi Re’em will revolve around Rabbi Irving Greenberg’s new book,  “The Triumph of Life, A Narrative Theology of Judaism".
9:00 pm - Erev Shavuot Service

COUNT THE OMER WITH TBE - NEVER MISS A DAY!

Pesach has ended - let the count-up to Shavuot begin! Welcome to counting the Omer! This year's theme for the Omer calendar was exciting to our student contributors as they thought about what they loved about Israel. Whether it was a place they had visited, or connections they have with family and friends, I know you'll enjoy their drawings that depict how "We LOVE Israel!"

Each day of the Omer (beginning with the second night of Pesach), you will find a new drawing or picture related to the theme of Pesach.

COUNTING THE OMER:  We count the omer for 49 nights between Pesach and Shavuot. Those 7 weeks represent the time between harvesting the wheat and barley, as well as the journey from Egypt to Mount Sinai where we received Torah after the Exodus.  COUNTING THE OMER IS A MITZVAH/COMMANDMENT.  Count along with us!

MAY 23rd-24th - TODAY IS 41 DAYS OF THE OMER

Starting tonight say: "Today is 41 days, which is 5 weeks and 6 days of the Omer."

Our youngest student, Ella, has drawn a rainbow and next to it, in Hebrew, "Shemesh" (Hebrew for 'sun'). The funny thing about rainbows is it takes the perfect combination of rain and sun to have one.

In that sense, rainbows are a lot like Israel. Israel is a combination of so many things: So many different flavors of Judaism, so many different people from all over the world, so many different thoughts about how things should be done. Maybe Israel isn't a perfect rainbow every time, but it's our rainbow.

Shabbat Shalom!
