Shavuot and the "Chain of Tradition"

In many respects, the "Chain of Tradition," the commitment to passing "Judaism" on to the next generation of Jews, is a central concern of the Festival of Shavuot.  In the 20th century,  American Jewry invented "Confirmation" as a ceremony for post Bar and Bat Mitzvah youth.  "Confirmation" served as a means of reaffirming continuity and the transmission of our history, laws, and celebrations to the next generation.

But what exactly is "Masoret" (Tradition) that we are passing on?  Is it the same content of Judaism that we received from our parents?  Did we even receive Jewish "content" from our parents?  What does it really mean to pass on Judaism?  This year's Tikkun Leil Shavuot, a night of study, as a symbolic re-enactment of receiving Torah will focus on this question of "transmission."  How old is the notion of "passing on Tradition"?  How did it evolve and change over the years?
What do we mean when we say that it is important for us to pass on Judaism to the next generation?  These are some of the questions that we will explore on Zoom on Sunday, May 16th at 7 pm.  The hour-long session will be followed by the evening service for Shavuot.
